Caring for people at the hospice can be a very difficult job, but also very rewarding. While providing emotional support and company a volunteer not only can create a caring environment, but also can learn. This are six reflections that I, as a hospice volunteer, want to offer everyone who is young and healthy.
1. Fear of death. Most of us want to live our life not thinking about the future. But when we are afraid to die, we also afraid to live!
2. Vulnerability. Sometimes we want to appear strong and tough, not letting anyone to come closer out of fear of being hurt. And where it gets us? It is very lonely place, even when people are around.
3. Unpleasant. Our race from unpleasant sensations, feeling, circumstances never ends. In the end of life we don’t even have energy to keep fighting. But there is great power in learning to be OK with unpleasant
4. Guarding sense doors. Sometimes we just need to give our sense organs a break. In this modern age we are never unplugged and our brain cells are powering though an immense amount information. There is a great benefit of quietude, calmness and mental rest. We need to learn to not only have a good body fitness to be healthy, but mind fitness too.
5. Accept and move on. Fighting against and hiding away are our go-to solutions. Learning how to accept is a powerful skill that anyone can acquire.
6. Giving back. Not only getting things can make us happy, but also giving can make us even happier!
